I recently re-read a great book by Simon Sinek, former COO for Yahoo. In His book “Start With Why”, he shares his bold goal to build a world in which the vast majority of people go home every day feeling fulfilled by their work. You can call it a movement to inspire people to do what inspires them.
This got me thinking about WHY we do the things we do each day. Any person or organization can explain what they do; some can explain how they are different or better; but very few can clearly articulate why. Why is not about money or profit – those are results. Why is the thing that inspires us and those around us.
From Martin Luther King Jr. to Steve Jobs to the Wright Brothers, “Start with Why” shows that the leaders who inspire all think, act and communicate in the exact same way – and it’s the complete opposite of what everyone else does.
Starting with WHY, I think, is more about your belief in something. I was recently conversing with a friend and she was telling me about a group of friends she meets with weekly, going to the downtown Hamilton homeless tent cities, offering necessities, clothing, warm blankets and most importantly, a listening ear.
These people have families, careers and are plenty busy on their own. What compels them to go, pushing past the fear and their own insecurities? It is written on their hearts to serve these marginalized people.
It is their Why!

If our leaders were diligent about starting with WHY, optimism would reign, and innovation would thrive. As Simon Sinek’s book illustrates, there is precedence for this standard. No matter the size of the organization no matter the industry no matter the product or the service, if we all take some responsibility to start with WHY and inspire others to do the same, then, together we might just change the world!
And that is pretty inspiring!
